I met Chris and his sister Shannon Stewart at Sheetz in Manassas on 02/06/2010. I have a lifted 2000 Wrangler with Rubicon drive train and Chris has a 2010 Rubicon Unlimited, bone stock. On the way to the meeting I assisted a Explorer driver stuck in the middle of 66. She had gotten stuck because she was in 4wd low and had a bald tire. Once I got her into 4wd high I was able to pull the explorer off to the side. Chris and Shannon were working on getting a surplus come along that their father had used in the military out of the back yard and got stuck.
At Sheetz we decided to take 66w, soon we caught up with a plow train that would slow things down to about 30 mph. To make things worse the plow on the left had a problem it would go randomly left into the snow bank! We assumed this is why a heavy duty wrecker was following. We exited at front royal and found a truck and 5th wheel camper stuck at a gas station. We talked to the owner and decided to chain it from the rear. This attempt didn't work because I never got any traction. I broke out the strap hook up the camper at the points the owner wanted and after a few tugs had it free. The grateful owner asked us how much, we told him he could make a donation to charity.
We continued on a parallel roads this was my favorite part because it was so quiet and beautiful with a lot of snow that hadn't been traveled on yet. close to Rt 11 I had a scare when traveling about 40 I came to a red light with a stopped pick up in the lane. I started to fish tail not wanting to hit the brakes I Turned left. This action pulled me left into a snow bank. I was glad I didn't spin out but upset that I was traveling to fast for conditions.
It took along time to get to the left road off of Rt33 to make the turn towards Flagpole. My GPS was directing us in approach to Flagpole that we wad not been on before. We stopped in the fresh snow that hadn't been driven on. It was deep!, however west there was less snow than we were getting at home, in fact It had stopped snowing all together at the trail. I traveled down the road about 1 mile before getting stuck in a ditch. First we wanted to get me unstuck then take it from there. After getting freed up Chris wisely started talking about turning around and back out. I agreed realizing that we had been heading down hill to this point, and the trip on the highway took so long that wrapping things up by dark would be a good idea.
Making 7 or 8 point turns doesn't seem that hard in theory but for some reason often the movement was toward the edge of the trail. Basically it went something like 4wd h reverse right , 4wd h forward left , 4wd low lockers on. Then shoveling the snow that had plowed up under my jeep. Not helping was after doing this a dozen times sometimes I would leave the emergency brake on. After getting turned around and shoveling some room for Chris to get past me and turn around also. Like my jeep it took quite a lot of tuning points and shoveling to get it around
isverigeapotek.com. I was impressed with the stock Rubicon on the way out we only had to strap it at one point where Chris had lost momentum. Other that that It did great! When at the trail head Chris asked if I was having fun? Yes It was fun. It turns out he, like me, enjoys getting stuck and unstuck. We were out before dark.
On the way home 81 had one lane down to pavement and everything was great till we came to 66. A plow train had traffic stopped and the road closed for about 45min. Once moving again things were slow for me because the ruts were causing the jeep to shake so bad I thought I might loose a filling. (I am going to get some gas shocks asap)
